babyTEL Ramps Up with FoIP T.38 over Internet Interoperability with OpenText RightFax 10
Type: News

babyTEL Inc., a provider of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solutions, announced the successful completion of interoperability testing with OpenText RightFax 10 and babyTEL's open Internet Fax over IP (FoIP) SIP Trunking service.

According to a release, the two companies can now provide fax transmission over the Internet on SIP trunks by supplying enterprises and hosted service providers with support for the T.38 FoIP protocol.
Enterprise fax server customers are moving to FoIP technology to leverage investments in converged voice and data networks as SIP/ T.38 trunking is being adopted in lieu of legacy PSTN. As a result of this successful interoperability, enterprise can extend the efficiency of FoIP technology beyond the enterprise border to the user end points.

"The interest and demand for SIP-based communication services within the enterprise market continues to grow and with it comes the need to support reliable fax communications," said Matthew Brine, Vice President, Fax and Document Distribution, OpenText. "At OpenText, we are committed to supporting this need through proven interoperability with industry-leading SIP trunking services, and we are particularly pleased to add babyTEL to our tested FoIP interoperability list."

"We are very excited to have our FoIP-optimized network certified for interoperability with OpenText's RightFax 10," said Stephen Dorsey, CEO, babyTEL Inc. "This collaboration between our companies marks an important chapter in FoIP, as it allows RightFax users to connect to our FoIP network using the readily available open Internet. By bundling babyTEL's T.38 Trunking, OpenText RightFax 10 is ready to operate with minimal configuration, once connected to the Internet."

NSW:Search for Naden hampered by bad weather

SYDNEY, Dec 8 AAP - Bad weather is hampering a police search for one of the most wanted
men in NSW.

Police helicopters have been unable to take to the air on Thursday because of low visibility,
and remain on standby near Nowendoc in northern NSW.

Malcolm Naden is believed to be on foot, armed and dangerous, after he eluded police
closing in on a campsite in bushland on Wednesday.

A 33-year-old police officer was shot in the shoulder during the operation.

A State Crime Command spokeswoman told AAP that police helicopters had been grounded
all day on Thursday.

But despite bad weather hobbling the air search, officers on the ground are ploughing
through wild terrain hunting for Naden, who is described as a master bushman.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione says he's confident Naden will be found, and
has warned that police will shoot if threatened.

"Our aim is to take this man into custody and put him before the courts," Mr Scipione
told ABC Radio on Thursday.

"If, however, we get to the point where an officer has to defend himself or herself,
then we'll take whatever course is necessary to ensure that they are safe."

Naden disappeared from his grandparents' home in west Dubbo in June 2005, days before
24-year-old mother-of-two Kristy Scholes was found strangled in his bedroom.

He is also wanted over the indecent assault of a 15-year-old girl in Dubbo in 2004,
and for questioning over the disappearance of another 24-year-old woman in January 2005.

There's a $100,000 reward for information that leads to his capture and conviction.

Naden, 38, is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, 177cm tall with a medium
build, brown eyes and possibly a moustache and/or beard.

NSW:Thousands in place for Oprah's shows

SYDNEY, Dec 14 AAP - Thousands of Oprah Winfrey fans have almost finished filing onto
the Opera House forecourt for her Sydney shows.

Ticket holders are almost all inside the cordoned-off site, with just a handful of
hopeful people still waiting in a line for last minute tickets - which will be made available
if there's any extra space within the site.

They include some diehards who queued for hours for just a glimpse of their television idol.

Several fans in the Macquarie Street queue looked exhausted as they waited to get in,
with at least one sinking to her knees and holding her head in her hands as she waited
in the morning sunshine.

Others were more buoyant, chanting Oprah's name and waving banners.

"I heart Oprah" t-shirts have been selling like hot cakes in Circular Quay shops.

"They've been flying out the shop all week," the owner of one shop, who declined to
be named, told AAP.

"I've never known anything like it."

Alan Lett, 65, slept rough in the Royal Botanical Gardens in an effort to see Oprah.

"I just put a towel over me, I did have a pillow. It was a bit cold," he told AAP.

"I only hope some way Oprah finds out about me and I get to meet her," he said.

"She's a beautiful person, so kind. I've been watching her for over 30 years."

Ticket holder Kylie McGrath said she and her husband had come all the way from Perth.

"Somehow we managed to get a ticket through the ballot, so the minute we won I said
to my husband, 'Book the flights!.'"

The first of Oprah's shows is due to be filmed at 10am (AEDT), the second about 5pm (AEDT).

SA: Bec Hewitt victim of grubby report, court told

Lawyers for former soapie star BEC HEWITT are trying to get New Idea to reveal its
sources .. for a story the magazine ran alleging the wife of tennis star LLEYTON HEWITT
had a new man in her life.

Ms HEWITT has taken Pacific Magazines .. the publishers of New Idea .. to court to
seek out who supplied the photos and words used in the story.

The photos showed Ms HEWITT with her children and a man who the magazine said was MARK
.. a former fitness trainer from Dallas.

But MARK turned out to be her brother SHAUN CARTWRIGHT .. who often travels with the
HEWITTS on the international tennis circuit.

In the South Australian Supreme Court .. counsel for Ms HEWITT .. ANDREW HARRIS ..

said the New Idea article was grubby .. and intended to insinuate she was involved in
an extramarital affair.

Mr HARRIS said MARK was a fabrication .. and finding the magazine's source would allow
Ms HEWITT .. who wasn't in court .. to take any future defamation action against that
person .. as well as New Idea.

Supreme Court Master ROBERT LUNN has reserved his decision.

SA: Lifesavers warn state swim program not safe

AAP General News (Australia)

SA: Lifesavers warn state swim program not safe

By Larine Statham

ADELAIDE, Dec 1 AAP - With 11 people drowning on South Australian beaches last summer,
the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia says it has serious safety concerns about this
season's state Vacswim program.

Surf Life Saving SA is not leaving water safety education to the state government alone,
increasing its presence this year, with many clubs providing two patrolled swimming areas
at each beach and extended hours of operation.

"There are 300 drownings in Australia each year," Surf Life Saving SA state manager,
Shane Daw said.

"Last year there were 11 drownings on South Australian beaches and the previous year
there were about four.

"That's a dramatic and alarming increase that should be of concern to everyone."

A review of the proposed Vacswim program to be offered to children aged between five
and 14, conducted by the Royal Life Saving Society South Australia deputy chairman Kevin
Burrows, found the program would provide inadequate guidance to instructors and overlooked
essential and basic survival requirements.

Vacswim is a SA government funded, privately run teach kids to swim program for school
aged children from five years and up.

Mr Burrows said for the first time in 78 years the Society had been compelled to prevent
Vacswim from using its Royal Life Saving log book in conjunction with the program.

Mr Daw said Surf Life Saving SA would be running a number of programs to assist several
different groups which frequent the beach, including rural Australians and migrants, who
accounted for 25 per cent of all drownings in South Australia.

"Complacency can also be one of the biggest factors," he said.

While there hadn't been a shark attack in SA in about four years, Mr Daw said there
had been a number of sightings already this season and that the rescue helicopter was
on stand by to herd sharks back out to sea.

"Shark attacks are not a common activity, but it evokes one of the biggest primal fears
in people," he said.

Emergency service minister Michael Wright said a fixed wing aircraft provided by the
University of South Australia would conduct shark patrols along the SA coastline, from
North Haven to Sellicks between 11am and 8pm on week days from Monday, to compliment patrols
already being conducted on weekends and public holidays by Surf Life Saving SA.

"The safety of beachgoers is paramount and it is important that our metropolitan beaches
are covered seven days a week over the peak summer period," Mr Wright said.

Record numbers are expected to flock to the beach this year, as the Bureau of Meteorology
forecasts higher than normal temperatures during the next three months.

The Bureau on Monday said Adelaide residents could expect another heatwave in February
and below average rainfall over Christmas and into the new year.

Air Marshal Houston said he needed to be careful about releasing information on a continuing

"The commandos were involved in a deliberate assault. They were out in the open and,
as they were doing their preparations, they were engaged by the Taliban," he said.

"There was a heavy exchange of fire."

It was not yet known what casualties the Taliban incurred.

"We haven't done battlefield clearance and obviously we were concerned with taking
the fight to the enemy and then getting our wounded and deceased member out of there,"

Air Marshal Houston said.

"As I have said in the past, if we are to make progress against the Taliban and help
the people of Afghanistan realise a brighter future, these types of operations remain
essential."

NSW: Christmas the time to spare a thought for carers

EDS: Embargoed until 0500 (AEDT), Monday, December 24.

SYDNEY, Dec 24 AAP - This festive season the NSW government is asking people to spare
a thought for those whose actions "embody the true spirit of Christmas" - carers.

"Almost 3,000 Department of Ageing Disability and Home Care staff will provide support
to over 5,000 people on Christmas Day in group homes, large residential centres and through
Home Care," NSW Disability Services Minister Kristina Keneally said in a statement.

"Our hard-working staff often go above and beyond the call of duty and form strong
friendships with their clients.

"They selflessly give their time and forgo spending Christmas celebrations with their
own family to help others ... (and) embody the true spirit of Christmas."

Also deserving recognition at this special time of year are the one in 10 people who
care for family members, friends or neighbours who may be frail older people, people with
a disability or have an ongoing illness, Ms Keneally said.

"Carers make an invaluable contribution to our communities and during Christmas it
is important that we take a moment to acknowledge their hard work," she said.

Fed: Rove puts wife's death behind him with TV return

By Michael Gadd, National Entertainment Writer

MELBOURNE, April 1 AAP - Rove McManus put the tragic death of his wife Belinda Emmett
less than six months ago behind him as he returned to live television tonight.

The three-time Gold Logie winner opened the first episode of Rove, on Network Ten,
with a pre-recorded address to thank family, friends, the media and his fans for their
support in recent months, before proclaiming he was ready for his return.

"I guess all there's left to say is I'm doing well, everything is fine, you don't have
to worry about me any more," McManus said.

"Without forgetting the past, today is about moving forward and I'm really looking
forward to tonight and I hope you are as well."

Then it was business as usual as he recommenced his trademark on-air banter with celebrity
guests, actress/singer Toni Collette and comedian Ross Noble.

He also introduced new regulars to the variety show - Hamish Blake and Andy Lee, Carrie
Bickmore and Dave Hughes - joining long-time sidekick Peter Helliar.

McManus proved cheeky as ever, dissecting current issues and even sending a camera
crew to sneak into the FINA World Swimming Championships, which is being shown on rival
network Nine.

More celebrity was to come, with Newcastle rockers Silverchair closing the show with
their number one single Straight Lines, as frontman Daniel Johns's wife Natalie Imbruglia
danced at the side of the stage.

McManus was upbeat throughout the show's newly tightened one-hour format, even during
ad breaks as he joked with the audience.

Rove, which dropped the Live from its name, returned to Network Ten in one of the week's
most hotly contested timeslots, Sunday at 8.30pm.

Rove had a chance to ease into its Sunday slot, starting during a break in the ratings
battle over Easter.

Rove's competition from Seven was a Grey's Anatomy repeat, and the Sam Neill movie
Merlin next week, while Nine is airing CSI: Crime Scene Investigation repeats this week
and next.

It has been less than six months since McManus' actress wife of 18 months succumbed
to cancer, aged 32.

The Federation of Parents and Citizens' Associations says introducing military cadet

The federation's president .. DIANNE GIBLIN .. says her group is concerned about the
motive behind the proposal .. namely that it would bring young people into line.

State opposition leader PETER DEBNAM has used Anzac Day to reinforce calls for a voluntary
cadet scheme to be expanded into more than 50 public high schools.

Almost nine thousand youths in New South Wales are involved in the federal-government
funded cadet scheme .. which has been dominated by private schools for the past 100 years.

Qld: Power companies post $6 billion plans

BRISBANE, Dec 20 AAP - Queensland's state-owned electricity distributors Energex and
Ergon Energy have revealed five-year plans to upgrade the state's electricity network
at a total cost of nearly $6 billion.

The plans follow the release in July of a report by independent evaluator Darryl Somerville
who recommended a number of reforms to the network following last summer's storms which
caused long blackouts and a huge public outcry.

Energex distributes power in the south-east corner of the state, while Ergon Energy
covers the remainder.

Energex chief executive Gordon Jardine said Energex needed to upgrade the capability
and resilience of its electricity network.

"As a result, we plan to invest more than $3 billion of capital expenditure over the
next five years to improve our electricity network," he said.

A record $421 million was being invested on capital works this financial year, including
an $85 million accelerated works program, he said.

Since last summer, Energex had increased network capacity by 600 megawatts, or almost
16 per cent above last summer's peak demand.

Ergon Energy executive general manager of distribution Terry Effeney said the corporation
planned to spend $2.9 billion over five years to keep the lights on in Queensland.

Mr Effeney said the blueprint would upgrade the network with a 25 per cent improvement
in reliability over the next five years and the construction of up to five new bulk supply
points and 28 zone substations.

The $2.9 billion program also includes a substantial increase in the state-owned corporation's
workforce.

"We know how important a high standard of electricity supply is to our customers and
we want to support continued economic growth and prosperity in regional Queensland - that's
our commitment now and into the future," he said.

IT'S A BOY! MOM GIVES BIRTH ON THE INTERNET

PHOTOBroadcast live on the Intenet, a 7 pound, 8, ounce baby boy is born at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday at Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, Fla. (ASSOCIATED PRESS PHOTO)

THIS ELECTRONIC VERSION MAY DIFFER SLIGHTLY FROM THE PRINTED VERSION.

A groaning, 40-year-old woman gave birth to a boy Tuesday in front of thousands of people who saw it not by elbowing their way into the delivery room but by logging onto their computers. It was billed as the first Internet birth, although in the fast-moving world of high-tech, that claim was disputed.

Viewers over the Internet didn't see anything more graphic than an episode of "ER." The cameras were discreetly held at the woman's side and in front of her hospital bed, but nurses' backs blocked any view of the actual delivery.

"After a certain point, you're not aware of all the commotion that is going on," said the mother, who wanted herself identified only by her first name, Elizabeth.

While the birth of the black-haired boy went smoothly, the same couldn't be said for the Internet broadcast over the Web site of America's Health Network, a cable TV channel.

A computer traffic jam limited the number of viewers to about 5,000 at any one time, only half of what the cable network had expected. At least 50,000 people at one time logged on to the site in an attempt to download the video footage.

"I wouldn't say we underplanned," said J. Tod Fetherling, president of America's Health Network-Interactive. "We had scaled out for the biggest number we could imagine and we have reached beyond that."

Sean was born at 10:40 a.m., more than 41/2 hours after the broadcast began. Elizabeth groaned several times before the 7-pound, 8-ounce baby emerged in front of the two cameras.

"Here comes Sean's head. He has a lot of hair on his head," said Dr. Walter Larimore, who narrated for the Internet audience from the delivery room.

Larimore, host of "Ask the Family Doctor" on America's Health Network, gave a play-by-play description as Elizabeth, already a mother of three, was injected with a hormone to induce labor and sat on a large plastic ball to help speed delivery.

Elizabeth's husband, Gilbert, held her shoulders. Her 10-year-old daughter, Sara, held her hand to her mouth in awe as she stood around the hospital bed with her 11-year-old brother, Joey, and 14-year-old sister, Lindsay.

"We just acted like nobody was there and everything went fine," said Gilbert.

The Orlando-based cable network's claim that it had the world's first Internet delivery was disputed by Tammy Barnes, 26, of Golden, Colo. She said she gave birth over the Internet in February, using a sort of video chat room that was accessed by up to 150 people, mostly friends.

Elizabeth said she agreed to the broadcast because she wanted to help educate other women. She was approached about the idea because of her history of easy childbirth and quick labor. Doctors had been planning to induce labor even before they were approached by the cable network.

Sean entered the world within 10 minutes after Elizabeth began pushing. Afterward, the other children took turns holding their baby brother.

"You've shared a miracle with the whole world," Larimore told the couple. "We're going to step out of your lives for now."
