Qld: Federal laws flimsy, says Beattie

Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE says laws introduced by the federal government to
overturn his ban on councils holding votes on forced amalgamations .. are flimsy.

JOHN HOWARD introduced the emergency laws yesterday .. to override legislation which
gave the Queensland government power to sack councils who hold polls on the enforced mergers.

Mr BEATTIE's threatened to challenge the federal legislation in the High Court.

He says the prime minster's intervention on the council amalgamations is politically
motivated .. because Mr HOWARD knows Queensland is an important state.
