Vic: Workers to decide whether they can smoke at work
Workers at a central-Queensland coal mine have won the right to decide whether they
can smoke at work.
Management at the Collinsville open-cut coal mine recently banned smoking anywhere
on site in the interests of workers' health.
But the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union claimed the policy was harsh,
unjust and potentially discriminatory.
Union industrial officer TIM CONROY says they argued smoking should be allowed in open
areas of the site.
Now the Australian Industrial Relations Commission has ordered that the matter be decided
by the majority of workers in a secret ballot.
Mine operator Thiess has yet to comment.
